Prelims Strategy

Prepare a four-column sheet: subject allocation, grouping, representation and institutional outcome. Under subject allocation write the three Union subjects and place residual powers with provinces. Do not supply the present Constitution’s stronger-centre logic from memory.

For representation, calculate the total rather than memorising 389 in isolation: 292 provincial places, four Chief Commissioners’ places and 93 for states. Pair the numbers with the method. Provincial representatives were indirectly elected through legislatures; the scheme was not an immediate universal adult-franchise election.

Grouping questions often change either location or timing. Keep Bengal with Assam in C and Punjab, the frontier province and Sind in B. Then check whether an option refers to initial participation or later exit. A later right does not settle an earlier procedural dispute.

Finally, separate the mission’s May statement from the Independence Act of 1947. The former sought a common Union; the latter created two independent Dominions. When evaluating a statement, underline the institution and date before judging the familiar-sounding constitutional vocabulary.
