Natural Resources — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Classify the resource by its renewal process and timescale, then check the local conditions. Reject the inference that a renewable category guarantees unlimited extraction. For water and soil, consider quality as well as quantity; for a mineral, distinguish physical occurrence from a usable, economically and technically defined supply.
For efficiency statements, multiply input per unit by activity before judging total pressure. Distinguish reuse, recycling and prevention rather than treating all waste measures as identical. A collected quantity does not prove complete recovery into useful material.
When comparing policy options, identify the actual constraint: availability, quality, infrastructure, access or an external environmental effect. More supply may not address a quality or distribution problem. During review, attach each wrong option to the category it confuses. This method is more reliable than choosing the option with the most positive environmental vocabulary, because a desirable-sounding measure can still fail to address the pressure described in the question.
