Definition
Money laundering concerns activity involving proceeds of crime that conceals, uses or presents those proceeds in ways addressed by the applicable law. In India, the Prevention of Money-Laundering Act links proceeds of crime to criminal activity relating to a scheduled offence.
The familiar stages of placement, layering and integration are a teaching model, not a rule that a prosecution must demonstrate a neat three-step sequence in every case. The topic connects criminal enforcement with preventive duties of reporting entities, financial intelligence and judicial safeguards.
Suspicion, attachment, prosecution and conviction are different stages and must not be treated as equivalent findings.
