The Parliament Attack of December 13, 2001, was a brazen act of terrorism targeting the very heart of Indian democracy – the Parliament House in New Delhi. On that fateful day, five heavily armed terrorists, identified as Pakistani nationals, infiltrated the high-security parliamentary complex.

Disguised as security personnel and driving a white Ambassador car with a fake Home Ministry sticker, they launched a coordinated assault. The attack occurred while Parliament was in session, though many senior leaders, including the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Leader of Opposition Sonia Gandhi, had just left the building.

The swift and courageous response from Indian security forces, including the Parliament Security Service, CRPF, and Delhi Police personnel, led to a fierce gun battle that lasted for approximately 30 minutes.

All five terrorists were neutralized in the exchange. However, the nation paid a heavy price, with eight security personnel and one gardener losing their lives, and several others sustaining injuries.

The incident sent shockwaves across India and the international community, underscoring the severe threat of cross-border terrorism and prompting a significant overhaul of India's internal security architecture and anti-terrorism legislative framework.

From a UPSC perspective, understanding this event is crucial for grasping the evolution of India's counter-terrorism strategy, the intricacies of India-Pakistan relations, the constitutional implications of national security threats, and the role of the judiciary in prosecuting terror-related cases.

It serves as a critical case study in internal security, demonstrating both vulnerabilities and resilience.
