Prelims Strategy

For NEET prelims, mastering significant figures requires a two-pronged approach: conceptual clarity and rigorous practice. Firstly, thoroughly understand the rules for identifying significant figures (non-zero digits, zeros between, leading zeros, trailing zeros with/without decimal, scientific notation, exact numbers).

Secondly, internalize the rules for arithmetic operations: for addition/subtraction, focus on decimal places; for multiplication/division, focus on significant figures. Always remember the rounding-off rules, especially the 'round to even' rule for '5'.

When solving numerical problems, identify the significant figures or decimal places of each input value first. Perform the calculation, keeping extra digits in intermediate steps to avoid cumulative errors.

Only round the final answer according to the appropriate rule. For conceptual questions, pay close attention to the wording, especially terms like 'precision' and 'accuracy'. Practice with a variety of problems, including those involving multiple operations, to build confidence.

Be wary of trap options in MCQs, which are often designed to catch common significant figure errors (e.g., rounding too early, misapplying rules).
