The Vice President of India is the second-highest constitutional office in the Republic of India, established under Article 63 of the Indian Constitution. This unique position combines two distinct roles: serving as the Vice President of the nation and simultaneously functioning as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha (Council of States), the upper house of Parliament.
The office was created by the Constituent Assembly drawing inspiration from the American model while adapting it to suit India's parliamentary democracy. Unlike the American Vice President who is elected directly along with the President, India's Vice President is elected separately by an electoral college comprising members of both houses of Parliament.
