74th Amendment	1992	The 74th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992, provided constitutional status to urban local bodies including Municipal Corporations. It inserted Part IXA (Articles 243P to 243ZG) into the Constitution, establishing a comprehensive framework for urban local governance. The amendment made it mandatory for states to constitute three types of municipalities: Nagar Panchayats for transitional areas, Municipal Councils for smaller urban areas, and Municipal Corporations for larger urban areas. It also added the 12th Schedule listing 18 functions that may be devolved to municipalities.	This amendment transformed urban governance in India by providing constitutional protection to municipal institutions, ensuring regular elections through State Election Commissions, mandating Ward Committees for larger municipalities, establishing State Finance Commissions for resource allocation, and creating a framework for democratic decentralization in urban areas. It completed India's three-tier federal structure and strengthened local self-government in cities.
