Functional Groups — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For UPSC Prelims, mastering functional groups requires a multi-pronged approach. Firstly, memorize the structures of the key functional groups (hydroxyl, carbonyl, carboxyl, amino, amide, ester, ether, alkyl halide) and their IUPAC nomenclature rules.
Secondly, focus on characteristic physical properties (boiling point trends, solubility) and understand the underlying reasons (e.g., hydrogen bonding for alcohols/amines). Thirdly, and most critically, learn the distinctive chemical reactions for each group, especially oxidation, reduction, nucleophilic addition/substitution, and elimination.
Pay close attention to specific reagents and identification tests (e.g., Tollens' for aldehydes, Lucas for alcohols, FeCl3 for phenols). Vyyuha recommends creating flashcards for each functional group, detailing its structure, properties, key reactions, and distinguishing tests.
Practice identifying functional groups in complex molecules and predicting their reactivity. Emphasize comparative analysis, such as the differences between aldehydes and ketones or alcohols and phenols, as these are frequent UPSC traps.
Connect functional groups to real-world examples like drugs and polymers to solidify understanding and prepare for application-based questions.
