Prelims Strategy

For Prelims, the strategy for the nervous system should be multi-pronged, focusing on both static and dynamic aspects. Begin by mastering the fundamental neuroanatomy: clearly differentiate between CNS and PNS, know the major parts of the brain (cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem) and their primary functions, and understand the structure of a neuron (dendrite, axon, myelin sheath).

Pay special attention to the 12 cranial nerves and the 31 spinal nerves, particularly the functions of key cranial nerves like the Vagus. The autonomic nervous system (sympathetic vs. parasympathetic) is a high-yield area; memorize their opposing effects on various organs.

Understand the mechanism of action potential and synaptic transmission, including key neurotransmitters and their associated functions/disorders. Reflex arcs are also frequently tested. Beyond static facts, integrate current affairs: recent breakthroughs in neurotechnology (BCIs, optogenetics), new treatments for neurological disorders, and government initiatives in mental health are crucial.

Practice MCQs that test conceptual understanding, application, and factual recall. Use mnemonics for cranial nerves and comparative tables (CNS vs. PNS, sympathetic vs. parasympathetic) for quick revision.

Vyyuha's Exam Radar suggests a strong focus on neurodegenerative diseases and AI applications in neurology.
