Conservation Biology — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For Prelims, a multi-pronged approach is essential. First, master the core definitions and concepts: differentiate between in-situ and ex-situ, understand genetic drift, inbreeding, and effective population size (Ne).
Second, memorize key Indian legislation (WPA 1972, BD Act 2002, FCA 1980) and their major provisions and amendments. Third, know the flagship conservation projects (Project Tiger, Project Elephant) – their launch years, objectives, and key achievements.
Fourth, be familiar with major international conventions (CBD, CITES, Ramsar) and India's role in them. Fifth, focus on current affairs related to new protected areas, species reintroductions, human-wildlife conflict mitigation, and technological advancements in conservation.
Pay attention to specific examples of species and their conservation status (e.g., critically endangered species in India). Practice MCQs extensively, including those with multiple statements, to identify subtle distinctions and common traps.
Create flashcards for quick recall of facts, dates, and definitions.
