Ecology and Environment — Revision Notes

Updated 19 Oct 2026

⚡ 30-Second Revision

  • Checked 18 October 2026.
  • NCERT 2026–27: NPP = GPP − producer respiration.
  • Productivity is a rate; biomass a stock.
  • Energy flows; nutrients cycle.
  • Carrying capacity depends on conditions.
  • Conservation: in situ within habitat, ex situ outside.

2-Minute Revision

Move from organism to population, community and ecosystem. Population change includes births, deaths and movement; logistic growth introduces resource limits. Classify interactions by their effects on both participants. Use matching units for productivity calculations and distinguish those rates from biomass. Conservation outcomes need evidence about the pressure and ecological response, not just a designation.

5-Minute Revision

Calculate NPP from GPP 900 and producer respiration 350 in matching units. Explain why a biomass stock of 550 would not be the same quantity. Classify an orchid–tree association and a predator–prey relation. Design two indicators that would test whether a proposed habitat connection restores useful movement.
