Network Security — UPSC Importance

UPSC Importance Analysis

Network security matters wherever public services depend on connected records and operations. A disruption can prevent access to benefits, health information or administrative systems even when no confidential file is publicly leaked. Conversely, a service can remain available while records are silently altered. Separating confidentiality, integrity and availability makes the harm and the required control clearer.

For Prelims, the useful distinctions are authentication versus authorisation, segmentation versus encryption, prevention versus detection, and incident response versus critical-infrastructure protection. NIST CSF 2.0 supplies a dated international framework, while the Indian institutional mapping must come from the relevant legal and government sources. The framework is guidance, not an Indian compliance certificate.

For Mains, connect governance to implementation: asset ownership, appropriate access, monitored events and tested restoration. A technology purchase may support one link without establishing the whole chain. A strong answer explains how controls reduce particular risks and how an organisation would know whether essential services can continue or recover after a failure.
