Nuclear Waste Management — Revision Notes
⚡ 30-Second Revision
- Checked 18 October 2026.
- BARC: vitrification immobilises high-level waste; it does not remove radioactivity.
- Two half-lives leave 1/4 of the starting amount.
- Storage ≠ final disposal.
- Reprocessing still leaves waste obligations.
2-Minute Revision
Characterise and segregate before choosing treatment and conditioning. Match containment to the stream. Follow interim storage and disposal responsibilities separately, including records, funding and monitoring. A decay fraction is a calculation, not a standalone exposure assessment.
5-Minute Revision
Starting with 80 units, calculate the remainder after two half-lives. Explain why the answer cannot establish safety by itself. Place segregation, vitrification and interim storage in their functional categories. Identify the evidence needed before calling a disposal facility operational.
Vyyuha Quick Recall
STCS: Segregate streams; Treat characteristics; Condition packages; Store with continuing responsibility. Assess final disposal separately.
