Nuclear Applications — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For Prelims, focus on factual accuracy. Memorize key radioisotopes and their primary applications (e.g., Tc-99m for SPECT, F-18 for PET, I-131 for thyroid therapy, Co-60 for sterilization/radiotherapy, C-14 for dating).
Understand the core technique behind each application (e.g., how mutation breeding works, the principle of SIT, how RTGs generate power). Identify the major Indian institutions (BARC, BRIT, AERB, DAE) and their specific roles.
Pay attention to the Atomic Energy Act, 1962, and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010. Vyyuha's advice is to create flashcards for isotopes, their half-lives (if significant), and their uses.
Practice MCQs that test your ability to differentiate between similar-sounding applications or identify the correct isotope for a given use. Current affairs related to new isotope production facilities, space missions using nuclear power, or advancements in nuclear medicine are high-yield areas.
