Nuclear Technology — Definition
Definition
Nuclear technology uses changes in atomic nuclei and the radiation associated with them for purposes including electricity generation, medicine, research and industry. Nuclear power stations convert heat from controlled fission into electricity; the reactor does not generate electricity by emitting electrons directly into the grid.
Understanding the technology requires separating the nuclear reaction, heat-removal system, electricity-conversion equipment and safety arrangements. Radioactive materials also require management beyond the period when they produce useful energy.
Nuclear energy is therefore both a scientific process and a long-term institutional responsibility involving regulation, safeguards and waste management.
