Bioremediation — Revision Notes

Updated 19 Oct 2026

⚡ 30-Second Revision

Lower concentration is not necessarily lower mass. In situ: in place. Ex situ: after removal. Biostimulation supports conditions; bioaugmentation adds organisms. Organic transformation may leave products. Metals can change form or mobility but are not biologically destroyed as elements.

2-Minute Revision

Bioremediation links a biological process to a defined environmental objective. Its categories describe different things: location, intervention and pathway conditions. A 100-unit pollutant mass in 10 litres becomes 5 units per litre after dilution to 20 litres, while mass stays unchanged.

Parent disappearance is incomplete evidence if products or residues matter. Metal immobilisation can reduce mobility without removing the element. Monitored natural attenuation requires a justified monitoring programme; intervention counts alone do not show the environmental result.

5-Minute Revision

Calculate the initial and final concentrations when 100 pollutant units in 10 litres are diluted to 20 litres. State exactly what has and has not changed. Next, assess a project where the parent compound falls but a mobile product rises: identify the missing evidence before declaring success. Finally, distinguish adding organisms from changing conditions and explain why an anaerobic pathway may not benefit from a proposal based only on oxygen addition.

Mass, products, pathways: check the amount, what it becomes, and how exposure changes before calling remediation successful.
