Drones, formally known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), are aircraft that operate without a human pilot onboard. These sophisticated machines can be controlled remotely by a human operator or fly autonomously based on pre-programmed flight plans or complex dynamic automation systems.

The term 'drone' often evokes images of military applications, but their utility has expanded dramatically into a vast array of civilian and commercial sectors, making them a ubiquitous technology in the 21st century.
