Geothermal Energy — Revision Notes

Updated 19 Oct 2026

⚡ 30-Second Revision

Heat, electricity, heat pump: distinguish the service. Net output = gross generation − internal use. Heating COP = heat delivered / electrical input. MNRE policy: 15 September 2025; policy publication is not project commissioning.

2-Minute Revision

Geothermal projects use subsurface heat under resource and site constraints. Direct heat avoids an intermediate electricity conversion. A binary power cycle transfers heat to a separate working fluid.

Ground-source heat pumps use electricity to move heat; COP four can mean four heat units delivered from one electrical unit plus three source-heat units. In the illustrative plant balance, 100 thermal units yield fifteen gross electrical units and twelve net after internal use.

Resource potential, pilot support and commercial operation need separate evidence.

5-Minute Revision

Work two balances. First calculate net output and net percentage from 100 thermal units, fifteen gross electrical units and three internally consumed electrical units. Next explain how a heat pump delivers four heat units using one electrical unit without creating energy. Classify a policy notification, a resource estimate and a commissioning report as different evidence. Finish by identifying a suitable question about reservoir conditions and one about the energy service demanded.

Resource, service, balance, evidence: assess the heat, choose the use, track energy and verify the project stage.
