IIT Delhi-AIIMS Collaboration Secures Grant for Nano-enabled Early Cancer Diagnostics
March 2025A joint research team from IIT Delhi and AIIMS Delhi recently secured a significant grant from the Department of Biotechnology for developing a novel nano-enabled biosensor for the early detection of pancreatic cancer. This initiative leverages quantum dots and gold nanoparticles to detect specific biomarkers in blood samples with unprecedented sensitivity, aiming to overcome the current challenges of late-stage diagnosis for this aggressive cancer. The project highlights India's commitment to indigenous innovation in nanomedicine and the crucial role of inter-institutional collaboration in translating research into clinical solutions, directly aligning with the objectives of the National Mission on Nano Science and Technology.
UPSC Angle: Illustrates India's progress in nanodiagnostics, institutional collaboration, government funding for S&T, and the potential impact on public health (early cancer detection). Relevant for Prelims (specific technologies, institutions) and Mains (S&T policy, healthcare innovation).
CDSCO Initiates Fast-Track Approval Pathway for Indigenous Nanopharmaceuticals for Neglected Tropical Diseases
September 2024In a strategic move to address the burden of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in India, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has announced a new fast-track approval pathway specifically for indigenously developed nanopharmaceuticals targeting these conditions. This policy shift aims to incentivize research and development in areas often overlooked by global pharmaceutical giants due to limited market profitability. The first nanomedicine under this pathway, a liposomal formulation for visceral leishmaniasis (Kala-azar), developed by CSIR-NCL in partnership with a domestic pharma company, is currently undergoing accelerated Phase III trials. This demonstrates a proactive regulatory approach to leverage nanomedicine for public health challenges.
UPSC Angle: Highlights regulatory evolution in India, government focus on NTDs, role of CDSCO, and the potential of nanomedicine for public health equity. Relevant for Prelims (CDSCO, NTDs) and Mains (pharmaceutical policy, public health, S&T governance).
