Research and Development — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For Prelims, your strategy for R&D should be heavily focused on factual recall and conceptual clarity. Begin by thoroughly understanding the core definition of R&D and its types (basic, applied, experimental development).
Memorize key statistics such as India's Gross Expenditure on R&D (GERD) as a percentage of GDP (e.g., ~0.64% in 2020-21, MoSPI 2023) and compare it with global benchmarks. Pay close attention to the names, mandates, and flagship projects of major R&D institutions like CSIR, DRDO, and ISRO.
For instance, know that DRDO is for defense, ISRO for space, and CSIR for industrial and scientific research. Understand the objectives and key features of important government initiatives and policies, including the National Research Foundation (NRF) Act 2023 (its governance, funding model, and broad mandate), Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), Startup India, IMPRINT India, and SERB initiatives.
Be aware of the constitutional backing for scientific temper (Article 51A(h)). Keep track of India's ranking in the Global Innovation Index (GII) and recent trends in patent filings (WIPO, INPTO data).
Focus on current affairs related to R&D, especially Union Budget allocations for science ministries and any new policy announcements. Create flashcards for names, years, and key figures. Practice MCQs that test your knowledge of these facts and your ability to differentiate between similar-sounding initiatives or institutions.
and are particularly important nodes for factual recall.
