IIT Madras to Establish First International Campus in Tanzania
July 2023
IIT Madras made headlines by becoming the first IIT to establish an international campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania. This initiative, part of India's broader diplomatic and educational outreach, offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in data science and AI. From a UPSC perspective, this highlights India's growing soft power, the internationalization of its premier educational institutions, and their role in capacity building in friendly nations. It also reflects the NEP 2020's emphasis on global engagement and making India a 'Vishwa Guru' (world leader) in education. This move could be a precursor to more such international ventures by other IITs, impacting India's foreign policy and educational diplomacy.
UPSC Angle: GS-II: International Relations (Soft Power, India-Africa relations); GS-III: Science & Technology (Internationalization of education, AI/Data Science skills export); GS-I/II: Education (NEP 2020 implementation, higher education reforms).
