Scientific Institutions — Definition

Definition

Scientific institutions organise research, funding, technical development and the translation of knowledge into public or industrial use. Their roles differ: a department may coordinate policy, a funding body may support projects and a specialised agency may operate missions or laboratories.

India's institutional landscape includes DST, CSIR, ICMR, ISRO and ANRF, each with a distinct history and mandate. Recognising those differences is more useful than treating the organisations as interchangeable science agencies.

A research proposal, a funded project and a validated application are also separate stages requiring different forms of expertise and accountability.
