Employee Provident Fund — Basic Structure
Basic Structure
Separate the terms
EPFO is the organisation. EPF concerns provident-fund accumulation, EPS concerns pension and EDLI concerns deposit-linked insurance. A contribution or entitlement under one arrangement should not automatically be added to the personal balance under another.
Read the current instruments
The 1952 Act is the historical foundation. The Social Security Code, its commencement arrangements and savings provisions require separate attention. The 2026 EPF Scheme was notified on 29 June and followed by an August corrigendum. A later scheme can supersede an earlier one while preserving specified earlier actions.
Calculate with stated assumptions
The 2026 Scheme's general contribution framework is twelve percent, with a ten-percent rate for the notified establishment class and other qualifications. Apply the relevant wage base and ceiling provisions. In an illustrative ₹10,000-base example at twelve percent, the employee amount is ₹1,200. Employer allocation must be distinguished from simply crediting the entire matching amount to EPF.
Keep records and benefits distinct
Additional voluntary employee contributions do not automatically require employer matching. UAN supports continuity across establishment-linked identifiers, but contribution accuracy still requires proper records. A closing balance adds stated credits and interest and subtracts debits. Account creation, claims processed and actual payment describe different administrative stages rather than interchangeable evidence of social-security outcomes.
