Occupational Health Standards — Definition

Definition

Occupational health standards guide or require the prevention of harm arising from work and its conditions. They address hazards, exposure, monitoring, protective measures and the health of the people affected.

A hazard identifies a potential source of harm; assessing risk requires the actual exposure circumstances and possible consequences. Health examinations can contribute to prevention, but they do not replace control of the working environment.

In India, the applicable legal framework must be identified through the relevant Code, standards and rules, with attention to jurisdiction and establishment type. International technical guidance can inform practice without automatically becoming binding domestic law.
