Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on nomenclature, a systematic approach is key. Firstly, thoroughly memorize the rules of binomial nomenclature: capitalization of the genus, lowercase for the specific epithet, italicization when typed, and separate underlining when handwritten.

Practice writing scientific names correctly. Secondly, understand the 'why' behind these rules – the need for universality, stability, and unambiguous identification. This conceptual clarity helps in answering theoretical questions.

Thirdly, be familiar with the full scientific names of common examples mentioned in NCERT (e.g., *Mangifera indica*, *Solanum tuberosum*, *Panthera leo*, *Homo sapiens*). Fourthly, differentiate between nomenclature and classification.

For MCQs, carefully read each option, paying close attention to formatting and capitalization. Trap options often involve incorrect capitalization or lack of italicization. For questions on codes, remember ICN for plants/fungi/algae and ICZN for animals.

Practice previous year questions to identify common patterns and tricky areas. Since these questions are often direct, precision in recall is paramount.
