External Morphology — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
To effectively tackle NEET questions on earthworm external morphology, a systematic approach is crucial. Firstly, memorize the exact segment numbers for key structures like the clitellum (14-16), male genital pores (18), female genital pore (14), and spermathecal pores (intersegmental grooves 5/6, 6/7, 7/8, 8/9).
Use mnemonics or repeated drawing to fix these in memory. Secondly, understand the function of each external part: prostomium for exploration, setae for locomotion, clitellum for cocoon formation, dorsal pores for moistening and protection, nephridiopores for excretion.
Thirdly, pay attention to exceptions and specific arrangements, such as the absence of setae on clitellar, first, and last segments, and the perichaetine arrangement in *Pheretima*. Fourthly, practice diagram-based questions extensively.
Be able to identify all major external features on an unlabeled diagram. Finally, be wary of trap options that involve slight shifts in segment numbers or incorrect functions. Always read the question carefully, especially looking for 'INCORRECT' or 'EXCEPT' keywords.
For conceptual questions, link the structure to its ecological role or physiological process.
