To excel in NEET questions on oxides, hydroxides, and halides, a systematic approach is vital. Firstly, memorize the definitions and classifications of each compound type, paying special attention to examples of acidic, basic, amphoteric, and neutral oxides, as well as peroxides and superoxides.
For hydroxides, understand the factors influencing their basicity and acidity. For halides, differentiate between ionic and covalent types and know the conditions for hydrolysis. Secondly, thoroughly understand and apply periodic trends: how acidity/basicity changes across a period and down a group.
This is a frequent area of questioning. Thirdly, pay close attention to exceptions and specific examples, such as and being amphoteric, or not hydrolyzing. For MCQs, carefully read the question and all options.
Eliminate obviously incorrect options first. For comparative questions, recall the relevant periodic trend or Fajan's rules. Practice identifying the oxidation state of oxygen in different oxides to distinguish between normal oxides, peroxides, and superoxides.
Finally, practice a wide variety of questions, including those that test conceptual understanding, trend application, and specific reactions.
