Prelims Strategy

For NEET prelims, a systematic approach to alkene properties is crucial. First, thoroughly understand the trends in physical properties (boiling/melting points, density, solubility) with respect to molecular mass, branching, and cis-trans isomerism.

Pay special attention to the reasons behind these trends. Second, master the chemical reactions. Categorize them by type: electrophilic addition, oxidation, polymerization, and combustion. For electrophilic addition, focus on the reagents, conditions, and the application of Markovnikov's rule.

Remember the peroxide effect for HBr. For oxidation, distinguish between mild (Baeyer's test) and strong (hot KMnO4\text{KMnO}_4, ozonolysis) conditions and the specific products formed. Practice predicting products for various substituted alkenes.

For conceptual questions, visualize the reaction mechanism, especially the formation of carbocations. For numerical problems (rare), ensure correct stoichiometry if asked about combustion. Always look for keywords in the question, such as 'major product,' 'peroxide,' 'cold dilute,' 'hot acidic,' which dictate the reaction pathway.

Be wary of trap options that apply the wrong rule or confuse reagents.
