Food Chains and Food Webs — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Draw the supplied links before evaluating statements about trophic levels. Put the producer at the beginning of each producer-based path and follow arrows toward consumers. For an omnivore, check the particular food item in the question instead of assigning a permanent level from the species name.
Label a pyramid as numbers, biomass or energy before deciding whether its shape is possible. A small producer standing stock can be replenished rapidly, so biomass snapshots require a turnover explanation. For transfer calculations, apply the given efficiency once per arrow and retain the area and time basis.
Reject statements that turn a simplified chain into a complete network or treat a possible cascade as an inevitable numerical result. Review wrong answers by identifying the missing link, reversed arrow or confused measurement. A useful practice exercise asks for two different paths to the same omnivore; it reveals why trophic position is a role within a pathway and not simply a fixed species label.
