Prelims Strategy

Start by sorting terms into structure, process, stock and rate. Add units to every numerical productivity question. For net primary productivity, subtract producer respiration from gross production within the same area and time; do not mix a standing biomass figure with an annual production rate.

Use a simple pond sketch to trace producers, consumers and dead material. Check the direction of energy transfer and distinguish it from nutrient reuse. Test absolute statements such as “all ecosystems are closed” or “decomposers return energy to producers” against the mechanism, rather than relying on keyword familiarity.

When two options describe restoration, identify which indicator each actually measures. Tree number does not automatically measure native species composition or every ecological function. In practice, explain why each wrong option confuses a category or accounting boundary. Link related ideas only after the basic distinction is secure; broad references to biodiversity should not replace a clear answer about the process the question specifically names.
