Ecological Framework

Begin with the function

Name the useful service and the environmental pressure to be reduced. Compare alternatives supplying a comparable service under stated conditions. A device that performs less work is not necessarily more efficient.

Separate intervention stages

  • Prevention changes inputs or processes before pollution is generated.
  • Treatment acts on an existing stream.
  • Recovery returns a usable material or resource to a productive destination.
  • Disposal manages residuals that remain.

These stages can complement one another, but their labels are not interchangeable. Green chemistry is particularly concerned with designing safer products and processes and avoiding hazards at source.

Set a life-cycle boundary

Inputs and manufacture → operation → maintenance → reuse, recovery or disposal. Identify any stage excluded from the comparison. A claim about emissions during operation does not automatically cover manufacturing or energy supply.

Use two measurements

Track pressure per unit of useful service and total pressure. Original check: 3 electricity units × 150 services = 450 units, which exceeds 4 × 100 = 400 even though efficiency improves.

Verify the delivery chain

Check feedstock quality, maintenance, skills, infrastructure and residual handling. Collection is not the same as completed recycling. A pilot demonstrates performance under its tested conditions; scaling requires examination of the conditions that change. Finish every assessment with measurable outcomes, a stated alternative and the principal uncertainty that monitoring should resolve.
