International boundaries are the legally defined lines that separate one country's territory from another's, establishing sovereignty and jurisdiction over land, water, and airspace. For India, these boundaries are crucial as they define the limits of Indian territory and determine where Indian laws apply.
India shares international boundaries with seven countries: Pakistan (3,323 km), China (3,488 km), Nepal (1,751 km), Bhutan (699 km), Bangladesh (4,096.7 km), Myanmar (1,643 km), and Sri Lanka (maritime boundary only).
Additionally, India has maritime boundaries with Maldives and shares waters with several other nations in the Indian Ocean. These boundaries were established through various historical processes - some through colonial demarcation like the Radcliffe Line (India-Pakistan), others through traditional agreements like with Nepal and Bhutan, and some remain disputed like portions of the India-China border.
