Network Security — Definition

Network security protects communications and connected systems against unauthorised access, alteration, disruption and misuse. It combines technical controls with operational responsibilities: knowing which assets exist, limiting access, detecting abnormal activity and restoring services when prevention fails.
A firewall is one control within that system, not a complete security guarantee. Encryption protects information in particular contexts but does not by itself decide whether a user should be authorised or whether an endpoint is trustworthy.
Effective network security therefore connects confidentiality, integrity and availability to the service that the network supports.
