Indian Space Programme — Definition

Definition

The Indian space programme is the coordinated development and use of launch systems, spacecraft, ground infrastructure and applications for national and scientific purposes. It includes communication, Earth observation, navigation, exploration and demonstration of new technologies.

Its effectiveness depends on the complete mission chain, from design and launch to reliable operations, data interpretation and use. ISRO, specialised centres, policy and authorisation institutions, commercial organisations and other participants perform different roles.

A successful launch is therefore one milestone rather than a complete measure of public value. Each mission should be assessed against its purpose, technical requirements, demonstrated results and the capability it contributes.
