Prelims Strategy

Classify the step described before selecting an answer. Separating streams is segregation; altering a stream can be treatment; immobilising and packaging it is conditioning. Storage maintains material for a period, whereas disposal concerns final placement. Words such as processed or contained do not establish which later responsibilities have been completed.

For decay questions, halve the remaining amount at each half-life. Starting from 80 units, two half-lives leave 20, not zero and not 40. Keep this calculation separate from a safety conclusion. A percentage remaining cannot determine an exposure outcome without additional information about the material and pathway.

For reprocessing and vitrification, identify what changes. Reprocessing recovers usable constituents; vitrification immobilises relevant waste in a glass matrix. Neither process means that radioactivity vanishes. Check the status language of an official source: research, interim storage and planned disposal are distinct from a commissioned final facility. Do not turn a future-oriented description into a present achievement.
