Prelims Strategy

Identify which classification a statement is using. In situ and ex situ concern treatment location. Biostimulation and bioaugmentation concern the kind of biological intervention. Aerobic and anaerobic describe different environmental conditions. An option that swaps these categories can sound technical while answering a different question.

For numerical questions, keep concentration and total mass separate. In the 100-unit example, doubling water volume halves concentration without removing pollutant. A falling parent concentration also does not prove that transformation products are harmless or that contaminants have disappeared from other phases. Read the stated system boundary before drawing a conclusion.

For metals, distinguish changes in oxidation state, binding and mobility from a change of chemical element. Biological treatment cannot destroy the metal as an element. Finally, avoid treating oxygen addition, organism introduction or a high intervention count as sufficient proof of success. A relevant pathway, compatible conditions and measured outcomes are needed; monitored natural attenuation likewise requires monitoring and a justified interpretation of the evidence.
