Elder Abuse and Protection — Definition

Definition

Elder-abuse protection addresses harm or distress arising within relationships of expected trust, including physical, emotional and financial mistreatment, neglect and abandonment. In India, the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 supplies specific maintenance, welfare and property-protection mechanisms, complemented by support services such as Elderline.

Protection must respect the older person's dignity and agency rather than treating age alone as incapacity. Effective policy distinguishes allegations, verified findings, legal remedies and continuing assistance.

It also measures safety and follow-through, since a report received or referral closed does not by itself establish that the underlying harm has ended.
