Disaster Displacement — Definition
Definition
Disaster displacement is compelled movement away from a home or habitual residence because of a disaster or its anticipated effects. Internal displacement remains within internationally recognised State borders, including when people cross a subnational administrative boundary.
Evacuation may be necessary for immediate safety, but the consequences can continue through interrupted housing, schooling, services and livelihoods. A movement count is different from the number of distinct people affected or the number still displaced on a specified date.
Resolving displacement requires attention to safe and informed choices and sustainable living conditions, rather than treating a shelter’s closure as sufficient evidence of recovery.
