Imagine a family of organic molecules that are the simplest and most fundamental building blocks in organic chemistry. These are the alkanes. At their core, alkanes are hydrocarbons, meaning they are composed exclusively of carbon (C) and hydrogen (H) atoms.

What makes them unique and gives them their 'alkane' identity is that all the carbon-carbon bonds within their structure are single bonds. This characteristic of having only single bonds means they are 'saturated' – each carbon atom is bonded to the maximum possible number of other atoms (either carbon or hydrogen), leaving no room for additional atoms to be added without breaking existing bonds.

This saturation is why their general formula is $C_nH_{2n+2}$, where 'n' is the number of carbon atoms. For example, if $n=1$, we get $CH_4$ (methane); if $n=2$, we get $C_2H_6$ (ethane); and so on. Each carbon atom in an alkane is $sp^3$ hybridized, which means it forms four single bonds arranged in a tetrahedral geometry, with bond angles of approximately $109.

5^circ$. This tetrahedral arrangement gives alkanes a three-dimensional structure that can rotate freely around the carbon-carbon single bonds, leading to various conformations. Because they lack highly reactive functional groups like double or triple bonds, or atoms with lone pairs, alkanes are generally quite stable and unreactive under normal conditions.

This inertness is why they are sometimes called paraffins. However, they do undergo specific reactions under harsh conditions, such as combustion (burning in oxygen) and free radical halogenation (reaction with halogens in the presence of UV light).

Alkanes are ubiquitous in nature, forming the major components of natural gas and petroleum, and are crucial as fuels, lubricants, and solvents in various industries.
