Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on Group 16 elements, a multi-faceted strategy is essential. Firstly, master the general characteristics and periodic trends. Create mental maps or flashcards for how atomic size, ionization enthalpy, electronegativity, electron gain enthalpy, and metallic character change down the group.

Understand the *reasons* behind these trends (e.g., increased shielding, effective nuclear charge). Secondly, pay special attention to the anomalous behavior of oxygen. This is a high-yield area. Memorize the reasons (small size, high electronegativity, no d-orbitals) and their consequences (hydrogen bonding, limited covalency, less negative electron gain enthalpy than sulfur).

Thirdly, **focus on the properties of hydrides (H2EH_2E)**. Clearly differentiate the trends for acidic character, thermal stability, reducing character, and bond angles. Remember that H2OH_2O is an outlier due to hydrogen bonding.

Fourthly, understand oxidation states and their stability. Practice calculating oxidation states, especially for oxygen in unusual compounds (OF2,H2O2,KO2OF_2, H_2O_2, KO_2). Grasp the inert pair effect and its impact on the stability of +4+4 vs +6+6 oxidation states for heavier elements.

Finally, know the allotropes of oxygen and sulfur (structures, stability, key properties). For numerical problems (less common but possible for bond energies or enthalpy changes), ensure you are comfortable with basic calculations.

When encountering trap options, always refer back to the fundamental principles and exceptions. Many traps exploit common misconceptions about oxygen's electron gain enthalpy or the general assumption of decreasing stability down a group without considering specific effects like steric hindrance in SF6SF_6.
