Definition

Space technology uses spacecraft, launch systems, ground infrastructure and data services to perform tasks beyond or through Earth's atmosphere. Its applications include communication, navigation, weather observation, resource monitoring and scientific investigation.

A satellite launch is one stage in a larger system: useful service also requires deployment, functioning instruments, data processing and users able to act on the information. Different missions use different orbits and instruments because their objectives differ.

Evaluating space technology therefore means connecting the physical measurement or communication function to a verified application, rather than treating each launch as an identical achievement.
