Geothermal Energy — Scientific Principles
Scientific Principles
Identify the service
Geothermal electricity converts part of a heat flow into electrical output. Direct use supplies suitable heat without first generating electricity. A ground-source heat pump exchanges heat with the ground using electrical input; it can provide heating or cooling. These applications have different temperature and equipment requirements.
Keep the energy balance
A hypothetical power plant receives 100 thermal units, generates 15 electrical units and consumes three electrical units internally. Net supply is twelve, giving a net-output ratio of 12 percent of the stated heat input. Gross generation is fifteen percent. Internal consumption must be deducted from generation, not added to it or silently removed from the specified denominator.
Understand heat-pump COP
If four heat units reach a building for one electrical unit, heating COP is four. In the simplified balance, three heat units come from the source. This is heat transfer with an additional energy input, not creation of energy or a four-hundred-percent electrical-generation efficiency.
Assess the resource and project
High subsurface temperature alone does not establish a viable power plant. Recoverability, demand, costs and environmental conditions require evaluation. Renewable does not mean unlimited local withdrawal. MNRE's September 2025 policy provides a dated Indian framework, while a pilot sanction, test result and commercial commissioning remain distinct stages. Match each reported milestone to the evidence it actually supplies.
