Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on proteins, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, thoroughly understand the basic building blocks: amino acids. Memorize the general structure, the classification based on R-groups (polar, nonpolar, charged), and the list of essential amino acids.

Practice identifying these. Secondly, master the concept of peptide bond formation and be able to calculate the number of peptide bonds in a polypeptide. Thirdly, dedicate significant effort to understanding the four levels of protein structure.

For each level, know its definition, the types of bonds/interactions involved (e.g., hydrogen bonds for secondary, disulfide bonds and ionic bonds for tertiary), and specific examples (e.g., hemoglobin for quaternary).

Use diagrams to visualize these structures. Fourthly, create a comprehensive list of protein functions with specific examples (e.g., enzymes like amylase, structural like collagen, transport like hemoglobin, hormones like insulin, defense like antibodies).

Lastly, understand the concept of denaturation and renaturation, including the factors that cause denaturation and its consequences. For conceptual questions, carefully read each option and eliminate distractors based on your structural and functional knowledge.

For numerical problems, apply the 'n-1' rule for peptide bonds. Pay attention to keywords like 'incorrect' or 'except' in the question stem.
