For NEET Prelims, mastering molecular and formula mass requires both conceptual clarity and computational accuracy. Firstly, clearly differentiate between molecular mass (for covalent compounds, discrete molecules) and formula mass (for ionic compounds, lattice structures).

This conceptual understanding will help you correctly interpret the question and choose the appropriate term, although the calculation method is the same. Secondly, practice calculation diligently. Always write down the chemical formula, identify each element, count its atoms (paying close attention to subscripts and parentheses), and then sum their atomic masses.

Use the atomic masses provided in the question or standard rounded values (e.g., C=12, H=1, O=16, N=14) unless higher precision is specified. For numerical problems, double-check your arithmetic, especially multiplication and addition.

A common trap is miscounting atoms, particularly in complex formulas or condensed structural formulas like C2H5OHC_2H_5OH. For conceptual questions, focus on the definitions and the underlying reasons for the distinction between molecular and formula mass.

Be wary of options that confuse amu with g/mol, or discrete molecules with formula units. Time management is also key; these calculations should be quick and accurate to save time for more complex problems.
