To excel in NEET questions on electronic configuration, a systematic approach is essential:
- Memorize the Aufbau Order: — Practice the filling sequence. The (n+l) rule is a reliable backup if you forget.
- Master the Exceptions: — Pay special attention to Chromium (Cr, Z=24) and Copper (Cu, Z=29), and other similar d-block exceptions (Mo, Ag, Au). Understand *why* these exceptions occur (stability of half-filled/fully-filled subshells).
- Electron Removal for Ions: — For cations, always remove electrons from the orbital with the highest principal quantum number (n) first, regardless of filling order. For transition metals, this means electrons are removed before electrons. For anions, add electrons to the lowest available energy orbital.
- Hund's Rule for Unpaired Electrons: — When dealing with degenerate orbitals (p, d, f), always fill them singly with parallel spins before pairing up. This is critical for determining magnetic properties.
- Quantum Number Rules: — Be absolutely clear on the allowed values for n, l, m_l, and m_s and their interdependencies. Practice identifying valid and invalid sets.
- Periodic Table Link: — Understand how the outermost configuration dictates an element's block, period, and group. The period is the highest 'n' value, and the block is where the last electron enters.
- Practice, Practice, Practice: — Solve numerous MCQs, especially those involving transition metal ions and exceptions. Time management is key, so quick and accurate application of rules is vital.
