To ace NEET questions on properties of ionic compounds, a multi-pronged strategy is essential:
- Master the Fundamentals: — Understand the definition of an ionic bond, the concept of a crystal lattice, and the strong electrostatic forces involved. These are the bedrock for all properties.
- Connect Properties to Structure/Energy: — Don't just memorize properties; understand *why* they occur. For example, high melting point = strong lattice energy. Conductivity in molten/aqueous state = mobile ions. Solubility = hydration energy > lattice energy.
- Focus on Key Energy Terms: — Lattice energy and hydration energy are critical. Understand how ionic charge and size affect these energies and, consequently, melting points and solubility. Remember: higher charge has a more significant impact than smaller size on lattice energy.
- Electrical Conductivity Nuances: — Clearly differentiate conductivity in solid, molten, and aqueous states. This is a frequent trap. Solid = no conductivity; Molten/Aqueous = conductivity due to mobile ions.
