Prelims Strategy

To excel in the Acids, Bases, and Salts section for NEET, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, ensure crystal-clear conceptual understanding of all three acid-base theories (Arrhenius, Brønsted-Lowry, Lewis).

Practice identifying acids, bases, and especially conjugate acid-base pairs in various reactions. For numerical problems, master pH, pOH, KaK_a, KbK_b calculations. Memorize the key formulas: pH=log[H+]pH = -log[H^+], pOH=log[OH]pOH = -log[OH^-], pH+pOH=14pH + pOH = 14, Kw=[H+][OH]K_w = [H^+][OH^-], Ka×Kb=KwK_a \times K_b = K_w, and the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation (pH=pKa+log[Salt][Acid]pH = pK_a + log\frac{[Salt]}{[Acid]}).

Pay special attention to very dilute solutions where water's autoionization cannot be ignored. For salt hydrolysis, systematically identify the parent acid and base to predict the solution's nature (acidic, basic, neutral).

Buffers are another critical area; understand their composition, mechanism, and how to apply the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation. Practice solving a wide variety of MCQs, including those with trap options, such as confusing strong vs.

concentrated, or miscalculating pH for dilute solutions. Time management during calculations is also key; use approximations where valid (e.g., for weak acid dissociation, if C/Ka>100C/K_a > 100).
