Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on alkali metal properties and reactivity, a systematic approach is essential. Firstly, thoroughly understand the electronic configuration (ns1ns^1) and its implications for their general properties like low ionization enthalpy, high electropositivity, and strong reducing power.

Secondly, memorize the trends for key physical properties (atomic/ionic radii, ionization enthalpy, electronegativity, melting/boiling points, density) and chemical properties (reactivity with air, water, hydrogen, halogens, liquid ammonia).

Pay special attention to the *exceptions* to these trends, particularly the anomalous behavior of Lithium and the reducing power order in aqueous solution (Li>Cs>Rb>K>NaLi > Cs > Rb > K > Na). For reactions, focus on the products formed (e.

g., Li2OLi_2O, Na2O2Na_2O_2, KO2KO_2) and the conditions. Practice identifying the reasons behind these trends and exceptions. When solving MCQs, carefully read the question to understand if it's asking about gaseous state or aqueous solution, as this affects reducing power.

Eliminate options based on incorrect trends or facts. For numerical problems (less common here, but possible for related calculations), ensure correct formula application and unit consistency. Regularly revise the flame colors and their respective elements.
