Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on alkali metals, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, thoroughly understand the periodic trends for all physical and chemical properties down the group (Li to Cs).

Memorize whether a property increases or decreases and, more importantly, *why*. For instance, know that ionization enthalpy decreases because atomic size increases and shielding effect enhances. Secondly, pay close attention to specific reactions: what products are formed when each alkali metal reacts with oxygen (monoxide, peroxide, superoxide), water, and nitrogen.

The reactions with liquid ammonia are also important. Thirdly, dedicate significant effort to the anomalous behavior of Lithium. Understand the reasons for its unique properties (small size, high polarizing power) and recall specific examples like its reaction with nitrogen, formation of hydrated salts, and its position as the strongest reducing agent in aqueous solution.

Fourthly, memorize the characteristic flame colors for each alkali metal – this is a frequent direct recall question. Finally, practice MCQs that involve comparing properties, identifying correct reactions, and explaining trends.

Be wary of trap options that reverse trends or misattribute specific reactions to the wrong metal.
