Definition

A compound ratio is created when two or more simple ratios are multiplied together to form a new, combined ratio. Think of it as combining different ratio relationships into one comprehensive comparison.

For example, if you have a ratio of boys to girls as 3:2 and a ratio of day students to boarding students as 4:1, the compound ratio would help you find the relationship between boys who are day students to girls who are boarding students.

This becomes (3×4):(2×1) = 12:2 or simplified as 6:1. From a UPSC perspective, compound ratios become critical when analyzing complex administrative scenarios involving multiple variables simultaneously.

For instance, when comparing the efficiency of different government departments across various parameters, or when analyzing demographic data that involves multiple classification criteria.
